The Siberian Husky is a beautiful dog; there is no doubt. One
of the wonderful characteristics of the breed is that there are
a tremendous number of variations of color and pattern that you
can find between dogs. There is also a variety of eye colors that
you can find – from brown to a beautiful icy blue color. It is
not unusual to find Siberian Huskies with eyes of two different
colors as well. The huskies also have a thicker coat than many
breeds, which comes from an origin in northeast Siberia where
the climate was cold and harsh. Despite the additional hair, Siberians
do not tend to be huge shedders, except for twice a year when
the season changes. They also keep their coats relatively clean
and odor free, meaning that the owner of a Siberian Husky need
only bathe the dogs once or twice each year.
Siberian Husky Size
The height of a Siberian Husky can run anywhere from 21-23.5
inches for male dogs, and 20-22 inches for females. Weight can
range from 45-60 pounds for males and 35-50 pounds for females.
The size of the Siberian can be misleading when determining the
strength of the dog. This breed is extremely strong for its size
and requires less food than many other breeds of comparable size
and weight. This is again due to its development as a work dog
that had to survive in harsher climates.
Variations Of Color And Pattern
The color of a Siberian Husky can range from black to pure white,
with many variations of brown and red in between. Most of the
time, the undercoat, face and paws are white. The contrasting
marking are often compared to those of a pinto horse, and can
be in any color and pattern variation. The eye color of this breed
of dog can also vary considerably, from brown to blue and shades
in between. Sometimes a dog will have multiple colors in each
eye. This is called “parti-colored”, and is an acceptable characteristic
with the American Kennel Association even for showing. It is also
common for a Siberian to have a different color for each eye (such
as one brown and one blue), and this is also an acceptable trait
called “bi-eyed”.
The coat of a Siberian Husky consists of two thick layers. The
first is a dense undercoat that is generally shed only once each
year. The topcoat is longer and coarser. The two coats allow this
breed to endure very cold temperatures, which makes it a good
outdoor dog in the winter in many climates. The coat stays relatively
clean and odor free, and usually only sheds once or twice each
year. This breed tends to mimic cats in the way it cleans and
grooms itself. The Siberian needs few baths, and will keep a beautiful
coat with only the occasional brushing, making it a very low maintenance
dog to own. The large feet sport hair between the toes to assist
the husky when walking on ice and snow. The coat and feet make
it clear that this dog was bred for colder climates.
Siberian Huskies are beautiful dogs. When you decide to bring
a Siberian into your family, part of the fun will be in selecting
a dog based on the color preferences that you might have. Another
factor to take into consideration is the personality
of the Siberian Husky. Personality and temperament are important
elements to consider when selecting a dog for your family.
