If you have
decided that a Siberian Husky is the right dog for you, it will be important for
you to make some preparations before bringing a dog home. The better prepared
you are to receive your new dog; the smoother the transition will be for both
of you. With a little bit of education and a few key supplies, you will be ready
to handle whatever your new little fur baby will throw at you!
Crate Training
For Your Dog
The first supply you should purchase in anticipation of your
new Siberian Husky is a crate. Crate training will make housebreaking much easier
and give your dog a safe and secure place to sleep. Although some dog owners may
see a crate as a cruel means of training any animal, keep in mind that dogs in
the wild tend to seek out a cozy shelter like a den for sleeping as well. The
mother will teach her pups to go to the bathroom in a different location than
where they sleep, just as your pup will learn not to soil in its crate. It is
instinct that tells a dog that a crate is a positive, secure location.
Dogs
And Children
While Siberian Huskies tend to be gentle creatures that are
good with children most of the time, supervision still needs to come into play
when mixing small children with a larger dog. If you are planning to bring a puppy
or dog into a family with kids, take some time to talk to them about the proper
ways of handling a dog before you bring the dog home. Talk to your children about
leaving the dog alone while it is eating or sleeping. Instruct the children not
to tease the dog or use loud voices and large gestures that the dog could interpret
as threatening. With some education and training, the relationship between your
kids and new dog can be a happy, peaceful one.
Keep in mind that the first few days and weeks with your new dog might
get bumpy at times. Whether it is a mature dog adopted from a rescue or a puppy
purchased from a breeder, all dogs will learn proper behavior through a fair amount
of trial and error. Prepare yourself for the fact that you will probably have
some soiling accidents in the house as you progress through the housebreaking
process. Your dog will have to learn the rules of the house, and you will have
to teach those rules with patience and persistence. With time and a positive attitude,
you and your dog will bond and develop a good relationship. Just make sure that
you begin the process with a positive attitude and a willingness to work through
the rocky points.
Get Real
Keep in mind that when you bring a Siberian
Husky into your home, you are probably not gaining a watch dog. You are adopting
a digger, an escape artist and quite possibly a howler. On the other hand, you
are also getting a friendly, playful and gentle dog that will love you and the
family it has joined. And quite probably that new addition to the family will
find a way into your heart as well as your home quicker than you can say “good
puppy”! Once you have set your heart on one of these beautiful dogs, the next
step will be to find one of many Siberian
Husky breeders that can meet your needs.
