There are currently three types of no bark collars commonly used on dogs.
They are all effective in reducing barking, but some people wonder if using
these collars are ethical. If you have a dog, you should know some basic
information about no bark collars before getting one for your dog.
Citronella Spray Collars
Some no bark dog collars emit a citrus smell if the dog barks for long. Because
the smell of citrus is not pleasant for dogs, they will eventually stop barking.
These collars often come with a design that makes them give out a hissing sound
before they release the citrus smell, so a dog that stops when it hears the
sound can avoid the release of the smell. Professional dog trainers and
veterinarians consider the use of these collars ethical, since the dog feels no
pain and can even avoid the discomfort.
Ultrasonic/Sonic Dog Collars
These collars emit a high pitched sound whenever the dog barks. This tone is
similar to the dog whistle sound. This sound can't be perceived by humans, but
it can be perceived by dogs, who learn to stop barking so as to avoid the sound.
Again, experts and trainers don't feel that these collars are unethical, as
there is no pain or injury to the dog. Dogs only get a bit annoyed, and they
learn how to avoid that eventually. To get better results, don't use this collar
for long periods of time, as dogs can get used to the sound and just ignore it.
Electric No Bark Collars
These collars give the dog a small electrical shock when it barks. The shock
isn't painful, it's similar to what you feel when you handle fabrics or walk
over a rug. Once again, mostly just an annoyance – but this is the type of no
bark collar that some people believe is unethical. The main complaint is that
this collar actually has a physical stimulus to the dog. Some people don’t like
that. However, these collars are very effective for reducing excessive barking,
so take them at least into consideration.
To deter a dog from barking excessively, you can choose from no bark collars
that use citronella spray, sonic or ultrasonic sounds, or electronic shocking.
Most people have no problems with spray collars or sonic collars, but the idea
of an electrical shock makes them think that shock collars aren't good for dogs.
None of these methods are considered dangerous for dogs.
no bark collars are a great way to reduce excessive barking that isn't related to your dog's health. Although most people don't have a problem with them, some of them think shock collars are unethical. Nevertheless, all no bark dog collars are perfectly safe.
