Nowadays, training collars are a necessity for teaching dogs to behave,
specially for occasions where visitors are involved. Laws today penalize dog
owners when their pets bark too much at night or growl or attack at people, and
even just a carefree play can be mistaken for an attack by a surprised stranger.
Dogs just follow their natural instincts, of course, and it takes some training
to make it behave and keep itself and its owner out of danger and trouble. Thus,
the increasing need for training collars of several types.
Choker Training Collars
Some people consider these dog training collars ethical while others prefer the
old fashioned leash. They help when the dog pulls too hard on the leash and
helps to correct other bad behavior too. These collars are mostly used for
walking the dog, specially when they are small or young and they haven't learned
yet how to behave with other people or dogs. Dogs eventually learn not to pull
too much on their leashes while they are out on a walk to avoid the choking
sensation caused when they pull on the collars. Some collars have some
protuberances for increasing the feeling on dogs that are particularly stubborn
or with very thick skins. As soon as the dog eases on the pressure, the
protrusions also lay flat back unto its normal angle.
Electronic Dog Collars
These types of training collars emit a short shock which surprises the dog when
it barks. The collar fits around the neck of the dog and the device from which
the small electric shock comes from is placed directly in front of the dog's
throat. These collars are not cruel, since it's not an electic shock, like the
ones seen in cartoons, but a static feeling, similar to the one we get when we
walk on carpets. These collars are very practical and effective as long as the
training is constant and supervised closely by the owner; just remember to take
the collar off when training is over so that the dog can rest.
In these days, training collars are more of a necessity than a luxury. The main reason of it is that laws today hold dog owners accountable for the behavior of their pets. Therefore, dog training collars keep both the dogs and their masters out of trouble.
