Preparing for your Siberian Husky
How the excitement mounts as you are preparing for the arrival
of your new Siberian Husky pup! You have spent plenty of time
researching and reading to determine that a Siberian Husky puppy
is the right dog for you and your family. You have interviewed
breeders to find the most reputable and responsible one in your
area. You have inspected the puppies in the litter to determine
that they are all healthy, happy and very friendly. You have dreamt
about your dog, and awaited his arrival with eager anticipation.
But how do you know if you are really prepared for your Siberian
Husky puppy to come home with you?
Despite the fact that you have already spent many hours researching
your chosen breed, there is still more work to do in educating
yourself in preparation for the care of your Siberian Husky pup.
Like any new babe coming into your home, you will be responsible
for the health and well-being of your new addition. And like any
new baby, the responsibility of that little one might seem overwhelming
when he actually comes into your home – away from his mother,
litter and the breeder who has taken such good care of him up
until now.
Getting Accustomed To One Another
Your Siberian Husky puppy might be afraid of you at first and
uncomfortable in his new surroundings. You will need to spend
some time with your new baby to help him acclimate to his home
and make him feel comfortable with having you as his new master.
Be forewarned that your first night together may very well be
rather long and sleepless. Siberian Husky pups are not big barkers,
but they do have a tendency to howl, and your little guy may very
well let a few lonely howls out throughout that night. The point
of this exercise for your dog is to find out if the rest of his
litter is nearby. Once you survive that first rocky night, rest
assured that subsequent evenings should go much more smoothly.
During the day, you can help this process by spending time playing
with your new Siberian Husky pup. It is a good idea to have a
few toys on hand for your puppy before you bring him home from
the breeder. That way, the two of you can begin the playtime bonding
experience right away. You might also want to have a collar and
leash ready, so that you can begin walks together as soon as possible.
Never allow your Siberian Husky puppy out of your house off lead,
since this breed likes to run.
Chow Time
Your breeder will be able to instruct you on a proper feeding
schedule for your Siberian Husky puppy. She will also let you
know what food your puppy has been eating up to this point. While
it is a good idea to buy feeding supplies like dishes ahead of
time, wait to talk to the breeder before selecting a brand of
puppy food. It is not good for a Siberian Husky puppy to switch
food too abruptly. If you do decide to change brands of food,
you can introduce the new type gradually by mixing it in with
the current diet choice.
Taking the time to prepare for your Siberian Husky puppy’s arrival
will certainly make the transition smoother for both you and your
new dog. Another part of the preparation process will be to create
a living space for your Siberian Husky puppy that will be
safe and keep your new baby content.
