Once you bring your pup home from the breeder, it is time to
begin Siberian Husky obedience training. Since these dogs tend
to be willful by nature, it is a good idea to set boundaries and
reinforce house rules with your husky from day one. An early beginning
will make your Siberian Husky’s obedience training go that much
smoother. Siberians are pack animals, so one of your pup’s first
concerns will be to establish the order of his new pack. Where
do you want to fall in the pack order? If you are interested in
training your Siberian Husky to obey your commands, you had better
make sure that your dog sees you as the Alpha dog – or leader
of the pack. Once your puppy sees you as the pack leader, he will
be much more willing to submit to your authority and the groundwork
is laid for Siberian Husky training.
Alpha Dog Training
Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take right away
to establish yourself as the Alpha dog of your puppy’s new pack.
Think of how to be “first” whenever you are working with your
dog. You should be the first one to eat and the first one to walk
through any door. When you come home, your dog should come to
greet you – never go to your dog to give him attention. If your
dog is blocking your path, make your dog move out of the way and
never step around him. These simple steps will show your dog that
you are in charge of the house, and training your Siberian Husky
will be much easier once this pecking order is established.
What’s In A Name?
Your dog needs to have a name as soon as possible, since this
is a key part of your Siberian Husky’s training. Whenever you
give a command to your dog, start with his name first and then
the instruction you want him to follow. For example, you would
say, “(Name), come!” or “(Name), sit!” By using your dog’s name
before giving a command, you will be certain that you have your
dog’s attention. You can also use your puppy’s name when you are
giving him praise for obedience. It is best never to use his name
during scolding, however. Another technique that works effectively
while training a Siberian Husky is to look your dog in the eye
when you talk to him. Huskies respond quite well to this practice.
Consistency Is Key
With an intelligent dog like a Siberian Husky, training effectiveness
will be determined by how consistent you are with the rules and
boundaries. Giving into your dog just once will tell this type
of dog that rules are made to be bent or broken. Given the opportunistic
temperament of these bright dogs, you will get pulled into a power
struggle while training your Siberian Husky the second the rules
are not firmly established and consistently enforced. Like any
willful babe, a husky pup needs to know that you are in charge
of the house for his own security and willingness to submit to
your authority. Don’t disappoint your Siberian Husky during training
sessions!
Establishing your authority over your dog will be a key in effective
training. It will also make your Siberian
Husky’s potty training go that much smoother.
