As soon as you have made your Siberian Husky pup a member of
your family, one of the first steps that you will probably be
anxious to complete is your Siberian Husky’s potty training. Just
like training a toddler about the proper place to potty, housebreaking
your pup will lead to greater freedom for you and your dog – and
less mess in the house! Siberian Husky potty training is sure
to be a successful process as long as you employ patience, persistence
and a positive attitude.
A crate is also a helpful tool that will expedite the process
considerably. A crate will bring out the instinct of your dog
that tells it never to potty in the same place that he sleeps.
If your pup’s crate is the proper size, you can use crate training
to teach your dog bladder control. This is done by confining your
dog to his crate for short periods of time, and gradually increasing
the amount of time as your puppy – and his bladder – mature. Crate
training can also be used for other aspects of Siberian Husky
training, so it becomes a valuable tool to have on hand even before
you bring your puppy home.
Set A Schedule
The next step in housebreaking your Siberian Husky is to establish
a routine for feeding and playing with your puppy. Try to be as
consistent with this schedule as you can each day. This way, your
dog will get used to the idea of being let out to eliminate at
certain times. This will begin your Siberian Husky’s housebreaking
by teaching your dog to wait until it is time to go outside to
potty. This routine will also help train your puppy’s bladder,
teaching your dog how to hold on when he is home alone or through
the night.
When your puppy is not in his crate, you will need to keep a
close eye on your Siberian Husky until housebreaking is complete.
If you see signs that your puppy needs to go outside, pick him
up and take him out immediately. Often the sign that he has to
go will be his nose to the floor and his tail up in the air. As
you take him out ask your pup, “Do you need to go outside?” Try
to repeat this question on your way out the door to establish
to your dog that this means it is time to potty! Once your little
guy has finished his business, praise him to the hilt! These kind
words of encouragement from you will actually motivate your Siberian
Husky to continue with potty training. Dogs love to hear positive
words from their masters, and are very eager to please.
Taking Care Of Accidents
If you catch your puppy in the act of eliminating inside the
house, pick your dog up and take him outside immediately. You
will also need to clean the soiled spot thoroughly, leaving no
scent of the accident behind. This is extremely important, since
your dog will go wherever it smells like it is okay! One effective
method of removing the odor of urine is a mixture made of water
and white vinegar. Test a corner of your carpet for colorfastness
before attempting to use this method.
With patience and persistence, you and your Siberian Husky will
survive housebreaking. Another aspect of owning Siberian Huskies
is adopting dogs through a Siberian
Husky Rescue/Adoption center.
