My Dog Is Extremely Underweight…?

I am a female siberian husky and she has always been a little thin, but now she super skinny. You can feel her ribs, spine, hip bones and everything. I am starting to get really worried because she never eats. She is almost 3 years old(in february). We free feed her. We still feed her Iams puppy food because we thought it would make her gain weight…

we also have another dog.. just a year old so she is on puppy food also. she is a healthy weight..

does anyone have any suggestions?

Try to get some grain free dog food, they are high in proteins which may help. Grocery store’ s dog food is junk food, they use poor quality to make the dog food and dogs actually can not get much nutrition from that.

This website has ton of good dog food that you can not find in petsmart or petco. Go to a local pet store and check out some dog food. I was feeding Iams to my dachshund and actually he was not doing well on it coz he pee was yellow and poo was green a lot and they were so smelly. Believe or not, good dog food , dog won’t have much waste(poo) out coz they get the good nutrition from a good dog food.

Buy some good food rather than the scraps of card board your feeding it.

well if your dog isnt eating that is the problem, so find some food she does eat, or switch to wet food, make the food apealing to her. if she is eating and getting more skinny see a vet

She may have worms of some sort. They drain the dog of its nutrition which makes them look as if they’re starving on matter how much you feed them. Take her to the vet if you can. If not, then try to get some dewormer from the store.

I think she’s too old for puppy food.
Also, if she’s not eating, you might want to try giving her food that is more flavorful (i.e. stinkier) such as canned food or fish. In fact, you could add some canned cat food to her kibble. This might make her more interested in eating.
You should also talk to your Veterinarian to rule out any other health problems that may be keeping her from eating and gaining weight.
    Good luck.

Have you taken her to the vet to find out what is causing the weight loss? You should have a full blood work done on her to make sure it’s nothing medically wrong and then go from there. Your vet will be able to help you on ways to help her gain weight, if there isn’t a medical condition, and if that is the case he will be able to prescribe medication to control or help the condition. Either way, she needs to be seen by a vet.

you need to stop feeding her puppy food.. You need to get her some Iams, lamb and rice or weight control.. Iams is good for them and is heathly.. Also try to feed her some can dog food to make sure that shes eats.. Also make sure that she haves plenty of water.. OR maybe there is something wrong with her and need to see a VET

No… don’t feed your dog puppy food!

Put her on a high protein diet. It will help her gain some muscle and density. You can put raw chicken in her food.

Your dog could have an intestinal parasite affecting the way she is absorbing her nutrition. You should DEFINATELY see a vet, he or she will run some tests, and perscribe you something to kill the parasite.

I would take her to the vet to get a health check. If everything checks out OK I would make sure the puppy isn’t eating her food. If thats not it I would try some canned food that you can visibly watch her eat to make sure she is getting calories. If she eats the canned food then I would start mixing the dry back in. Maybe she isn’t liking the current dog food. Some dogs are picky. But first and foremost I would get her to the vet and make sure she doesn’t have a health issue.

    Good Luck.

I suggest a trip to the vet. A healthy dog WILL NOT starve themselves. Your dog is not healthy and she needs to be evaluated by a vet.

Give her a worm pill. Every day mix 1 can dog food into her dry food. Once she has had her fill remove any leftovers and offer them to her later..give her leftover meat in her dish if you can and try another dry dog food for her something for bigger breeds maybe .

mabey it likes the other dog keep your other dog in another room and see what happens swithch to adult food Does your dog eat a lot of food, but never seems to gain weight? Could it be because he (or she) is not absorbing the nutrients in their food? If discovering your dog is losing weight, you may want to visit your local veterinarian for a check up to determine the reasons for this. It could be all about your dog's nutrition and maybe you need to switch to a premium dog food or there could be serious health problems.

There are supplements to help dogs gain weight. Certainly don’t start feeding her fatty table scraps or anything like that- use a safe pill or medication. Talk to your vet to get them, or visit a pet store. You should probably just go to the vet anyway, s/he may be able to diagnose the problem.

First, put her on adult food. She is too old for puppy food. There are dog gravy’s on the shelves at “Petsmart, Petco, etc) in the dog food isle that may make her eat better. My dogs wouldn’t eat either until I put the gravy on their food. Now they look forward to eating as soon as they finish the last time. You can also try vanilla or strawberry yogurt (the big canister) and put a couple scoops in the food and sturr it around. They love it!! She will be fine, just take her to the vet to get her checked out and make sure that she does’t have worms.

Second, it sounds like she could have some intestinal worm or something along that line. But don’t worry, it is a quick and easy fix,
